Your Gateway To The Greatest Whitewater Kayak Adventures in the World

The Charley River

Thought of by many as the most beautiful river in Alaska, the Charley river runs crystal clear from the nonglaciated peaks of the Mertie Mountains, about 150 east of Fairbanks, to the mighty Yukon River. The river flows north through three distinct regions: high alpine Dall sheep country, to tight boulder strewn canyons with rock walls up to 1000 feet high, into the vast open flood plain of the Yukon. The only National Wild and Scenic River to have its entire watershed so designated, the Charley is home to the highest concentration of Peregrine Falcons in the United States. Besides the 13 mile canyon section of Class III-IV whitewater, depending on water level, the Charley has about 80 miles of nearly continuous fun Class II which is filled with Arctic Grayling, char, sheefish, northern pike and even a small run of Chinook Salmon. Add to this the plentitude of other wildlife, including grizzly and black bear, caribou, moose, Dall sheep, golden and bald eagles and the Charley isn’t just one of the best river trips in Alaska, but one of the best in the world.
